From Situation To Situation: Leadership Qualities
In a perfect world, the only leadership qualities you would need would be bringing everyone a cup of coffee and casually reminding them of deadlines. And, in this perfect world, all employees would happily do their jobs and give you no worries. You would probably all whistle while typing. Of course, there is nothing even close to this idea and the leadership qualities you need are considerably more complex. And, while we could not pinpoint every quality you have to possess, we can explain how each situation requires different ones and how you have to be prepared for anything you come across.
The leadership qualities you have depend greatly on the type of company or team you have to oversee. No situation is the same and how you handle it will differ from how another would. What you must understand, however, is every situation determines what you have to do. You need qualities that will make things work for any occasion, not remain rooted in one scenario. If that seems confusing, we will explain.
There are more variables in running a business than you might think: every person, every project, every demand, these things change daily. You have to be able to handle them; that means having the leadership qualities that will allow for flexibility and patience. These, above all qualities, are the ones you need. They will help you go from situation to situation with ease and the knowledge that you can handle things as they come.
Of course, there are certain aspects of your job that will not change. The type of team you have, for example, tends to remain (unless you have the luxury of firing people at will). Your leadership qualities have to reflect best toward them. If you happen to have colliding personalities, then you have to be able to deal with each person as an individual, rather than looping everyone together as a group. Your strengths have to come from reading your team and knowing how best to you. But, since each team is different, so will the leadership qualities you will use to motivate.
Some teams, for example, need to be strictly ruled. They require firm deadlines and definite structure to work. This usually happens when you have too many people to oversee individually and you need fast results. On the other hand, you may have a small team and a strict example may not be the best way. These situations tend to be more personal and your leadership qualities should reflect a more open and democratic nature. Work is done, of course, but not with a "you will all be fired if you make one mistake" approach.
It is up to you to decide what leadership qualities you need to make your project or company succeed. Ultimately, the choice will spell success or failure in the eyes of others. Each situation is different; that is why we cannot give a list of things you have to use, other than flexibility and patience (those are always needed). The truth is, your qualities will be up to you and how you read each day as it comes.
