What is Leadership?

What is Leadership? Although you likely feel that you know the answer to “what is leadership,” if you actually ask yourself the question, the answer isn’t always as obvious as you might have suspected. Essentially, the answer to “what is leadership” is the ability to get things done through people.

Leaders are people who know what leadership is and can use the process to obtain their goals.  It is not a science, and therefore it cannot simply be broken down into a few little points that can be learned.  Being a leader is something that some people are born with and others try gruelingly hard to learn – sometimes successfully, sometimes not.

But in order to truly achieve the best level of leadership, you really do need to know what leadership is.  After all, you are never really sure whether you’re going to reach your goal, no matter how great of a leader you are.  Therefore, if you are able to understand what leadership is, you will at least be as prepared as you can be for using your skills to their greatest advantage.

Many people have tried to break down the answer of “what is leadership,” and though the answers are quite varied, there are some themes that appear to be relatively universal.  For one thing, responsibility is key to leadership.  When you asked yourself “what is leadership,” one of the first things that came to your head on the topic was likely responsibility.

The leader is the person that the other team members will look to in order to make certain that the job is completed properly and on time.  Therefore, leadership is more than simply an honorary position.  It is a status where you will be expected to complete a job, and delegate responsibilities, or the lack of achievement will become your fault and you will need to take ownership of that.

This is why it is so critical to truly understand what leadership is.  You can then be proud of your position, and act accordingly to what your team is expecting from you.  You have the ultimate first and last say regarding the progress of the task.  However, this does not necessarily make you a good leader.  This is another story altogether.

In order to achieve true leadership, you need to show it.  You need to demonstrate your leadership skills, or people will not be motivated to follow you.  You must be ready to try to understand the way that each of your team members function.  Then you’ll know how to get things done through these people in the best way possible. This is considered a key to leadership.

If you are seeking the rest of the keys to leadership, you may find that a large number of them are actually tucked inside of you.  They simply require practice to draw them out and recognize them.  By practicing and increasing your awareness enough, you help to include yourself among the truly skilled leaders of this world.
